Stanford’s new Center for Academic Medicine (CAM 1) will become a home for various Stanford Medicine departments located across the Stanford Medicine Campus. The new Center for Academic Medicine will house researchers, faculty, leadership, and administration. This project, led by general contractor Level 10 Construction, consisted of a three-story underground parking structure with a capacity of 830 vehicles and an approximately 170,000 sq. ft., 4-story administration building.
DeSilva Gates Construction put its resources to the test to prepare the basement for the construction of the three-story underground parking structure. DeSilva Gates Construction excavated and removed approximately 160,000 cubic yards of dirt to a depth up to 42 feet below original grade.
To complete this monumental task and keep the project on schedule for Level 10 Construction, DeSilva Gates dispatched the largest excavator in their fleet, a John Deere 870G Excavator customized by Peterson Tractor in San Leandro with a bucket capacity of 10 cubic yards. With our highly skilled operators, the John Deere 870G has the ability to load a double bottom dump truck in 2 heaping scoops in under 45 seconds.
With approximately 13,000 loads of dirt to off haul, the continuous requirement for trucks and locations to dump the off hauled material was crucial. Utilizing affiliate company Double D Transportation, the job site saw up to 70 trucks coming and going up to five times a day during high production shifts. In coordination with affiliate company Pacific States Environmental, DeSilva Gates had adequate dumpsite facilities to accept the material from CAM 1. The joint effort between DeSilva Gates, Pacific States, and Double D enabled the successful completion of the excavation.
Once the basement was excavated down to the bottom, DeSilva Gates utilized a long reach excavator to off haul the 42-foot tall by 250-ft long ramp that was the main point of entry for workers and trucks. The parking garage pad was then finish graded utilizing various pieces of small equipment which were later required to be picked out of the basement with a crane.
