In order to improve long-term durability and performance of Runway 28L, this project at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) included the reconstruction of the runway between Taxiways Echo and Lima, crossing Runways 1L and 1R. DeSilva Gates Construction demolished the existing pavement structure down to subgrade and reconstructed the middle section of the runway from the ground up. In addition to the reconstruction of the runway itself, all lighting infrastructure that was impacted by the reconstruction area was replaced, two deteriorated storm drain lines that crossed under this section of the runway were replaced, and the new runway pavement was grooved and striped. This project also provided an overlay of Runway 1L, extending 300 feet from each side of the Runway 28L centerline. 

The timeline for this project was very tight as disruption to SFO operations needed to be kept to a minimum. Construction work was required to be completed in 15 consecutive days. In this short timeframe, DeSilva Gates Construction successfully setup the closure of the runways, removed existing lighting, excavated existing pavement, installed new drainage pipes and electrical conduit, prepared subgrade, placed aggregate base and geotextile fabric, placed cement-treated base and asphalt concrete, installed airfield lighting, and striped the pavement prior to re-opening the runways. 

By carefully coordinating each stage of the project and working around the clock, DeSilva Gates Construction was able to fast-track the completion of each phase and subsequently completed the work two days early, in just 13 consecutive days.
