Caltrans Route 70 Widening Project
Route 99 to Feather River Boulevard in Sutter & Yuba Counties
On the Route 70 Widening Project we took advantage of our extensive development experience and our relationships with State and Federal Regulatory Agencies to develop three borrow sites that provided 1.2 million cubic yards of import borrow material for construction of the new highway that was moved using heavy off-highway earth moving equipment rather than highway dump trucks. This not only reduced the impact to the environment and the traveling public by eliminating 100,000 highway truck loads of dirt, it also provided adjacent landowners with commercial catfish ponds as well as new wetland habitat for local wildlife.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Route 70 Project was located just west of East Nicolaus adjacent to existing Highway 70 between Marysville and Natomas. This project was multi staged and included the construction of a 4 lane bypass freeway to bypass the town of East Nicolaus. Work included new construction, reconstruction, bridges, and a new interchange.
DeSilva Gates Construction moved over 1.2 million cubic yards of import borrow in three months utilizing a combination of Cat 657 scrapers and dump trucks. Project quantities included 400,000 cubic yards of roadway excavation, 1.2 million cubic yards of import borrow, 600,000 tons of base rock, and 275,000 tons of hot mix asphalt.
DeSilva Gates was able to acquire three borrow sources adjacent to the project which, at completion of the project, provided local farmers with ponds in which they were able to raise catfish and provide habitat for local wild life. This produced more scraper dirt which reduced the amount of truck traffic required to move import and also reduced the impact to the traveling public.
Despite several utility delays and environmental restrictions, DeSilva Gates was able to open the bypass to the traveling public one year early.
